We all are coming to recognise the need to reduce the impact our lifestyles have on the world around us.
As our Deodorant Stones are made in the USA and shipped to us in the UK we have attempted to calculate the amount of carbon dioxide associated with this transport.
The Potassium Alum that the Stones are made from occurs naturally in the USA, but not in the UK, so we would have to ship the raw materials the same distance even if we were to make them here.
Other deodorant crystals are generally sourced from Thailand, which involves shipping them nearly four times as far.
Typical shipment
- 4000 x 60g Stones = 240Kg
- 1000 x 120g Stones = 120Kg
- 1000 x 120g Roll-ons = 120Kg
- 1000 x 120g Sprays = 120Kg
- Total 600Kg + boxes + pallet = 700 Kg
Land travel
- 0.7 tonne 700 km at 0.563 Kg CO2/km at 5% = 19.7 Kg
- 19.7 Kg / 7000 items = 2.8g CO2 per item
Sea freight
- 0.7 tonne 6800 km at 0.014 Kg CO2/tkm = 66.6 Kg
- 66.6 Kg / 7000 items = 9.5 g CO2 per item
To put that in context the average car will emit that much CO2 in driving 100 metres.
Each of our 60g Stones last at least 6 months so is replacing around 6 conventional deodorant sprays.
